How do you know if a Rolex watch is real?

The most common things to look out for include:

Check your Rolex serial number

A real Rolex has a deeply etched serial number, currently completed using laser etching. The serial number will also be on the 6 o’clock side of the watch where the band connects with the lug. If you have a new Rolex watch, you’ll find the serial number on the inner bezel.

Identify the model number

Model numbers are found on the 12 o’clock side of the watch where the band meets the lug and must be verifiable for it to be real. The original Rolex design should also be placed on top of the model number.

To identify the model number you may need to remove the band. You can easily do this by using a paperclip to remove the pin that keeps the band in place.

Review the self-winding and mechanical movements of the watch

Rolex watches have the word ‘Rolex’ engraved on the movement but the placement of this varies model to model. You will only be able to tell a fake vs real Rolex watch if it is opened up.

Look at the size of the date

A real Rolex watch has the date appear larger than it is due to the cyclops lens. When running a finger over the watch crystal and lens you should be able to feel a bump on the convex lens above the date.

Identify whether the watch is waterproof

Rolexes are known for being waterproof. Different models have different waterproof capabilities. For example, Rolex Oyster Perpetual watches have a minimum of 330 feet water resistance level and a Rolex Submariner has a water resistance level of 1,000 feet.

Before checking if your Rolex is waterproof, ensure the screw is fully wound down so that no water can get in.

Check that your hand motions are smooth

Real Rolex hand movements are smooth. If your watch appears jerky and has a ticking noise, it’s likely to be a fake.

Establish whether your watch crystal has a micro-etched crown logo

A tiny crown logo should be micro-etched at the 6 o’clock position of the watch for watches manufactured after 2002. A magnifying glass and proper lighting will be needed to locate the crown logo.

Review the winding crown

The crown is the small knob on the side of your watch. Real Rolex crowns are made from one piece of metal. Fake Rolexes have crowns made from multiple pieces of metal joined together. This should be identifiable using a magnifying glass.

Examine how much your Rolex weighs

Real Rolex’s are often heavier than counterfeits. You can Google the weight of your watch model before buying or selling it to ensure you have an authentic Rolex.
